ClearRoad exists because a dash cam is only worth having if it captures the one detail that matters: a license plate, a sign, a face, in the moment something goes wrong. Most of those moments happen at night or in bad weather, which is exactly when cheap cameras fall apart. So that is where we focus our testing.
We mount every camera in a real car and drive the same routes in daylight, at dusk, and after dark. Then we sit down and scrub through the footage frame by frame, checking whether plates are actually readable rather than just present.
Some links here are affiliate links, and we may earn a commission if you buy through them at no extra cost to you. It never shapes our verdicts. If a popular camera can't read a plate two cars ahead at night, we will tell you.
