Should You Repair or Replace Your HVAC System?
By ComfortMatch HVAC · 1 min read
Few home decisions feel as stressful as choosing whether to repair an aging HVAC system or replace it entirely. A new system is a major expense, but pouring money into a failing one can cost even more over time. Here is how to think it through.
Consider the age
Most air conditioners and furnaces last about 15 to 20 years with good maintenance. If your system is past the 12 to 15 year mark and faces a major repair, replacement usually makes more sense. Newer systems are also far more efficient, which lowers your monthly bills.
Apply the repair cost rule
A useful guideline is to multiply the repair cost by the age of the system. If that number exceeds the cost of a new unit, replace it. A $1,000 repair on a 16-year-old system is often not worth it.
Watch for frequent breakdowns
One repair is normal. But if you have called for service several times in the last couple of years, the system is telling you it is near the end. The repairs will keep coming, and so will the bills.
Factor in efficiency
Older systems waste energy. If your bills keep climbing despite normal use, a high-efficiency replacement can pay back part of its cost through savings over the years, and may qualify for rebates or tax credits.
Think about comfort
Uneven temperatures, excess humidity, and constant cycling are signs an old system can no longer keep up with your home.
