What to Do in the First 48 Hours After a Car Accident
By ClaimBridge · 2 min read
The hours right after a car accident are chaotic, and what you do in them can affect both your recovery and any future claim. Here is a calm, ordered checklist for when you are anything but calm.
At the scene
- Check for injuries and call 911. Health comes first, always. Request medical help even if injuries seem minor; adrenaline can mask serious problems.
- Move to safety if the vehicles are creating a hazard and it is safe to do so.
- Call the police. An official report is one of the most valuable pieces of evidence a claim can have.
- Document everything. Photograph the vehicles, the damage, the road, skid marks, traffic signs, and any visible injuries. Get the other driver's name, license, insurance, and plate.
In the first 48 hours
- See a doctor, even if you feel fine. Some injuries, especially whiplash and concussions, surface a day or two later. A prompt medical record links any injury directly to the crash.
- Notify your insurance company to report the accident, but be careful about giving recorded statements before you understand your rights.
- Write down your memory of events while it is fresh, including the time, weather, and what each driver did.
What to avoid
Do not apologize or admit fault at the scene, even reflexively; it can be used against you later. Do not accept a fast settlement offer from an insurer before you know the full extent of your injuries. And do not post about the accident on social media, where it can be taken out of context.
Why this matters
These steps protect your health first and your options second. If you are unsure whether you have a claim, a free consultation with a personal injury attorney can clarify where you stand before any deadlines pass. This article is general information, not legal advice.
