7 Tips for Clean Cuts Every Time
By The CutCraft Studio Team · 2 min read
A great SVG file is only half the equation; clean cuts depend just as much on your machine setup. If you are getting tearing, dragging, or incomplete cuts, these seven fixes solve the vast majority of problems.
1. Choose the right mat
Mat grip matters. Use the green StandardGrip mat for cardstock and vinyl, the blue LightGrip for thin paper, and the purple StrongGrip for thick materials like leather or chipboard. The wrong mat lets material shift mid-cut.
2. Keep your mat sticky
A mat that has lost its tack lets material slide, causing misaligned and torn cuts. Clean your mat with a lint roller or gentle wash, and replace it when it no longer holds firmly.
3. Check your blade
A dull or nicked blade drags and tears, especially on intricate designs. Wipe the blade, pick out trapped scraps, and replace it periodically. A foil-ball trick (poking the blade into a ball of foil) helps clean off buildup.
4. Use the correct material setting
Selecting the wrong material is the most common cause of bad cuts. Match the setting exactly to what you are cutting, and use Custom settings for unusual materials rather than guessing.
5. Do a test cut
For a new or expensive material, run a small test cut first. It takes a minute and saves you from ruining a full sheet with the wrong pressure.
6. Press material firmly to the mat
Use a brayer or a flat tool to roll the material onto the mat, removing air bubbles and ensuring full contact. Loose material lifts and tears.
7. Use More Pressure if needed
If a material does not cut all the way through on the first try, use the More pressure option for that setting rather than cutting twice, which can cause misalignment.
The payoff
Dial in your mat, blade, and settings, and even detailed designs cut cleanly. Most cutting problems are not the file; they are one of these easy-to-fix variables.
