How to Frame Printable Art on a Budget
By Frame & Pixel Studio · 1 min read
One of the best things about printable art is how affordable it is, and your framing can stay affordable too. With a few smart choices, a $10 download can look like a piece from an upscale gallery. Here is how to frame on a budget without looking cheap.
Buy standard sizes
The secret to cheap framing is sticking to standard print sizes like 8x10, 11x14, and 16x20. Off-the-shelf frames in these sizes cost a fraction of custom framing. Most printable art is offered in exactly these dimensions for this reason, so choose your size before you print.
Use a mat to elevate the look
A mat, the cardboard border between the art and the frame, instantly makes a print look more expensive. It adds breathing room and a gallery feel. You can buy precut mats cheaply, or buy a frame that includes one. A white or cream mat suits almost everything.
Hunt for frames secondhand
Thrift stores and yard sales are full of solid wood frames for a couple of dollars. A quick coat of spray paint in black, white, or natural wood unifies mismatched frames into a coordinated set, which is perfect for a gallery wall.
Match the frame to the room
Thin black or natural wood frames feel modern and let the art shine. Ornate gold frames suit traditional and maximalist spaces. Keep frames consistent within a single wall for a cohesive look.
Upgrade the little details
Replace flimsy frame glass with nothing at all on casual prints, or add a non-glare acrylic for important pieces. Hang with proper picture hooks and a level. These small finishing touches are what make budget framing look intentional rather than improvised.
